Open-plan living and dining area with sofa, yellow chairs, wood ceiling and partition

The brief called for a home which could comfortably accommodate three generations—the client, his parents and his child—while also hosting visiting family members. They wanted a space that allowed togetherness and interaction yet offered privacy and personal comfort to each inhabitant.

Front elevation of two-story brick house with terrace planters, wooden entryway and metal gate design

Situated in a serene lane of Satna, Madhya Pradesh, the residence celebrates earthy aesthetics and thoughtful design. The exterior features warm terracotta tiles juxtaposed with stark concrete edges, seamlessly blending natural textures and contemporary geometry. This balance grounds the home in its landscape while giving it a distinctly modern character.

The upper-level features two lavishly-sized windows, breaking the terracotta-clad monotony and inviting ample natural light, creating a dynamic interplay of volumes. Subtle accents of blue in the metal fixtures, such as the gate and grilles, add a contemporary layer that complements the earthy tones.

Cozy courtyard with wicker lounge chair, potted plants, textured stone wall and sliding glass doors
Bright upper-floor foyer with patterned tiles, jali screen, green bench and framed wall art

The central courtyard forms the heart of the home, bringing in abundant natural light and ventilation across both floors. The contemporary re-interpretation of the traditional Indian elements makes the design stand out. Terracotta jalis in patterned grids, across the skylights and balconies, cast shifting shadows that animate the interiors throughout the day. These perforated screens also serve as a filter for harsh sunlight while maintaining privacy and climatic comfort.

Recreation room with ping pong table, wood cabinets, built-in kitchenette, ceiling fan and warm lighting
Bedroom seating nook with daybed, round table, wood flooring, framed artwork and built-in wardrobe

A multipurpose recreational room on the upper storey acts as a lively family hub. Anchored by a table tennis setup and flanked by an integrated kitchenette, cozy reading nooks and an aquarium, this space blurs the boundary between leisure and utility and offers a tucked-away hub for family bonding and relaxation.
